Is there really a big difference between instant coffee and gourmet coffee?
Yes! Instant coffee lacks body, flavor and aroma. It consists primarily of Robusta beans which has high caffein content but lacks the flavors and aroma of Arabica beans.
How long should coffee be stored?
Coffee beans can be stored for 3-4 weeks without a significant loss of flavor or body for as long as its kept properly such as in an air tight container and away from direct sunlight or high heat. Ideally, coffee should be consumed within 2 weeks from purchase/roasting to be able to enjoy the full flavors of the coffee beans. Coffee, like wine, is sensitive to severe temperature changes.
Should I buy whole or ground roasted coffee beans?
Whole beans are better than ground as the flavors and body are kept longer. However, if the coffee is consumed within a couple of weeks from roasting, then ground coffee is just as good.
What should I do to make excellent brewed coffee?
There are 3 important factors in making an excellent cup of brewed coffee: 1. Good beans, 2. Properly and freshly roasted beans, and 3. Proper brewing of coffee. Good beans is a matter of taste. Like wine, there are general rules that constitute good beans but at the end of the day, it's a matter of personal preference. Some beans tend to change flavor as its roasted darker so a slight knowledge of the type of beans and how it's roasted helps. Many don't realize the importance of freshly roasted beans. The flavors and body of the coffee beans comes from the oils after it's been roasted. After a certain period of time the oils start to dry up and thus the flavors and the body start to lessen. There are many types of brewing methods from espresso to french press to drip machine. Any method is good for as long as it's done properly. One may be have an excellent espresso brewer but if not done properly, then the coffee will not be as good.
